Two people were injured after a small plane crashed on the 405 Freeway near John Wayne Airport in Orange County Friday.

Airport officials say a Cessna 310 came up just short of the runway and landed in lanes at 9:35 a.m.

Orange County Fire Capt. Larry Kurtz told the Associated Press the two people who were injured would be taken by helicopter to a hospital.

The injured people were a 62-year-old male pilot, who sustained a back injury and facial injury, and a female 55-year-old passenger with a head cut and facial injury, according to KPCC's media partner NBC4.

Both were conscious and breathing as they were taken to Orange County Global Medical Center. The woman reportedly pulled out the pilot, who is her husband, NBC4 reports.

A traffic incident report from the California Highway Patrol indicated the plane caught fire.

The crash briefly forced a freeway closure in both directions. Northbound lanes reopened shortly after the initial report, but southbound lanes at MacArthur Boulevard remain closed, airport officials said via Twitter. The airport access road from the southbound 55 Freeway is open.

Departing flights were not affected. The airport had been closed to arriving flights, but shortly before 10:30 a.m. officials said arrival traffic was open again.
