Heath officials have reminded the public that cold weather can be fatal as England and Wales temperatures fall below -7C.

Temperatures dropped to -7.2C in South Newington, Oxfordshire, overnight and many areas are expected to remain cold over the coming nights.

Dr Angie Bone, from the extreme events team at Public Health England, said: "Cold does kill, even in places where the temperatures are not at their lowest.

"Now is the time to prepare for the cold weather forecast by the Met Office, and to think of those you know who are older, very young, or have pre-existing health conditions who are particularly vulnerable."

The Local Government Association's (LGA) annual winter readiness survey shows that councils are well prepared for the drop in temperatures and have stockpiled 1.2 million tonnes of salt for the months ahead.

Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: "Tonight will stay clear and chilly across central and southern parts of the UK and Ireland, where temperatures will fall below freezing. Under the clear skies and with light winds a severe frost will develop over the south again,"

"Scotland and Northern Ireland will be cloudier and milder with patchy rain for the northern half of Scotland."

Thursday marks the beginning of meteorological winter, which lasts until 1 March.
