Two exes were forced to sit through a terribly awkward interview to discuss how they share custody of their pet pug Nutella .

The wriggly pup was a bone of contention for Julia Towle and Paul Huby when they split up after two years together.

Even though, as Paul explained during the This Morning interview, he had bought Nutella as a birthday gift for his then girlfriend Julia he didn't want to give him up.

"We were all living together in the house. Then we split up and the dog didn't know where he was going.

"The thought of not seeing him was bad for us both. Then it got a little bit heated," he told presenters Eamonn and Ruth.

He added: "I bought Nutella for us all to live as a family. I do work from home so I spent a lot of time raising him and training him as a puppy."

So when the couple split - just two months ago - they were forced to come to a custody arrangement after consulting the law.

Julia, who at one point during the interview took hold of Nutella from Paul when he couldn't contain the pup any longer, said: "He loves the dog. I'm never going to be that person that is going to keep him away from Nutella."

Paul, who seemed quite smug that the cute pug had his surname, explained that now the two split Nutella's time from Wednesday to Wednesday.

Solicitor Vanessa Lloyd Platt joined the former couple on the couch to offer her legal opinion on the situation which has become a more frequent occurence.

"There was a gap in the law because the law doesn't recognise pets the same way they do humans. They're regarded as chattel, like the fridge."

Now Vanessa advises couples on organising issues that may arise like vet bills, holiday plans and if the pet dies.

Paul added of their arrangement: "We are quite lucky. We have a good support network."

Viewers thought the whole segment was pretty amusing: "Talk about awkward # PetCustody # ThisMorning"

"Why would you want to continue seeing an ex over a pet # thismorning and I find it strange that a man would be that bothered by an animal," asked one.

"Pet Custody...what a ridiculous concept! Just grow up and make a mature decision after you've broken up. # ThisMorning"
