In response to increased border crossings, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has confirmed that President Trump will on Wednesday sign an order to deploy the National Guard to the US-Mexico border.

Nielsen also clarified that the order would mirror George W. Bush's 2006 deployment, in which the National Guard played a support role but had no law enforcement jurisdiction. According to Nielsen, the numbers continue to increase, April we see more people crossing the border without a legal right to do so. “Today is the day. The threat is real”. On the deployment, she says “We do hope that the deployment begins immediately.”

Nielsen declines to characterize size of deployment: "It will be as many as is needed to fill the gaps that we have today." Nielsen says Nat. Guard authorities will, at this point, be similar to what Bush deployment was in '06 (no enforcement jurisdiction/mostly support roles)

The Trump administration is also say the National Guard troops could head to the US-Mexico border as soon as Wednesday night.
