Autumn Equinox 2017 in Northern Hemisphere will be at 3:02 PM on
Friday , September 22 Central Time.

What happens during the autumn equinox?
Twice a year, around March 20 or 21 and Sept. 22 or 23, the sun's rays shine directly over the Earth's equator. These two days are known as the March (vernal or spring in the Northern Hemisphere) equinox and the September (autumnal) equinox.Sep 20, 2012

Is today the autumn equinox?
Seasons are opposite on either side of the Equator, so the equinox in September is also known as the autumnal (fall) equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, and is considered the first day of fall. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is known as the vernal (spring) equinox and marks the first day of spring.

What happens during the equinox?
The March equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth's equator – from south to north. This happens on March 19, 20, or 21 every year.

What is the equinox and when does it occur?
The Spring Equinox is the first day of spring season and occurs when the sun passes the equator moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere. The North Pole begins to lean toward the sun again. Day and night have approximately the same length.
