"He was crying. I assumed he was letting the emotion of the day get to him. Then he said it. 'I don't think I can do this.'"

Cyndi Maisonneuve was having the finishing touches put on her bridal makeup when her fiancé came into her hotel room to tell her he couldn’t go through with their romantic island wedding.

As she sat there in her veil, with her wedding dress hanging on the back of the door just metres away, he said he was sorry, but he wouldn’t be waiting for her at the end of the aisle.

“He came into the room and said we needed to talk alone,” Cyndi told The Guardian.

“He was crying. I assumed he was letting the emotion of the day get to him. Then he said it. ‘I don’t think I can do this’. I couldn’t understand. I asked: ‘Are you joking?’

“He shook his head. I stood there – with the veil already in my hair. This man who was supposed to be the love of my life was telling me he was calling off the wedding less than an hour before we were due on the beach. I didn’t even ask why. I told him to leave.”

Cyndi’s sister was left to cancel the ceremony while the devastated bride paced the hotel room that had, until recently, been “theirs”. She had almost convinced herself he was just suffering cold feet, and didn’t mean what he’d said when she opened their wardrobe.

“If there had been any question that it was just last-minute jitters, opening the wardrobe proved otherwise,” she said. “While I’d been out that morning, he had taken all his clothes and passport. He’d actually left me. I was heartbroken. Humiliated, devastated.”

Worse still, the couple spent the next week at the same resort as they couldn’t return to their home in Canada until the end of the planned honeymoon.

Upon returning home, Cyndi moved in with her parents, rebuffing her former fiance’s suggestions they get back together but not marry, and she has finally started to think about trusting a man again.

“Now, six years on, I’ve started dating again,” she said. “What happened is far enough in the past now not to hurt so much. I told a new friend about it recently and I realised it’s actually a pretty great anecdote. I can even laugh about it.”
