Last June, Esme Chester’s parents took their 2-year-old daughter in for a routine blood test. Unfortunately, they left the doctor’s office with unexpected bad news. The little girl was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure.

Esme was forced to spend 14 months on dialysis, 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Both parents, Lee Chester, 37, and Rachel Mulhearn, 27, were desperate for solutions and got tested for organ donation. Luckily, they were both matches. ‘We were both tested and although Rachel was a match, I was a better match. I said yes immediately,’ Lee said.

However, excitement turned into worry as Esme suffered a stroke in December and went into intensive care for six weeks, delaying the transplant surgery. She was forced to re-learn how to eat and walk and even spent her third birthday in the renewal ward of the hospital.

Once she was in a better place, Lee gave the little girl one of his kidneys. Thankfully everything went as expected and they are both recovering well.

Esme’s story and positive attitude throughout her illness has been an inspiration to her family, hospital staff and people who’ve heard the story.

‘She’s so strong-willed, that’s part of what she’s been through,’ Lee said of his daughter. ‘She knows her own mind, she’s very funny, caring and she says she loves us all the time. But she also has a strength from all this.’

As expected, Lee has no regrets about having given up his kidney. ‘This is something that any parent would do, you just say yes, it's in the terms.’
